What technology is involved in dog breeding?

I need to know what kinds of technology are used when breeding dogs. Many topics imply that technology is used, but never give a full description. Perhaps someone here knows something of the industry and can help me?

I should explain - I don't mean small time dog breeding. I mean professional, top-of-the-line dog breeding. What technology is involved in dog breeding?
In addition to what the first 2 posters have mentioned. There is all the proper health testing now widely available for all dogs of all pure breeds. OFA %26amp; Penn Hip for hip classifications, also for elbow. Thyroid testing, Testing for VwD, all kinds of blood screenings if it applies to your breed.

Testing for STD's which dogs can have and carry and result in dead pups or deformed pups, or death of pups.

DNA for testing for paternity testing and for record keeping of a particular stud.

Ultra sounds for a variety of diagnoses when the pups are in utero. X-rays too!

Just about anything a human can have checked for so can a dog now! It is the wise and responsible breeder who uses all this technology to their advantage to produce sound and health pups and to produce pups with no genetic defects too.

They are coming out with amazing and wonderful things all the time to help breeders to produce the best and soundest litters possible. The breeder/owner just has to look and then take advantage of them.

ADD: The biggest diagnositic tool is the x-ray machine. It is what is used in determining Hip %26amp; Elbow dysplasia in dogs. Then it would the ultrasound then all the labs equipment used to test and diagnose any further health screenings.
Are you thinking artificial insemination??

We manually collect dogs to analyze their sperm (count, motility, mobility). We use microscopes and sperm counters to analyze the sperm.

We also have the ability to freeze sperm to be used at a later date or to be shipped all across the world for breeding. Our hospital has a few semen tanks where we store frozen semen. Just the other day we surgically inseminated a b*tch with sperm from a dog who has been dead for 10 years. Crazy, huh??

Before breeding we can test for Brucellosis (canine STD) and do vaginal cultures and semen cultures/analysis to rule out any issues/health concerns before breeding. We also draw blood to test progesterone levels to determine the best days to breed. LH tests can also be run from serum to find the LH surge.

We can artificially inseminate (AI) b*tches through fresh, fresh chilled, and/or frozen sperm. If the sperm is frozen you must surgically inseminate the b*tch. During a surgical AI we make a small incision and using a spay hook we find the uterus and directly inject the sperm into the uterine horns. We then massage the sperm up to the ovaries to help things along.

We determine pregnancy through ultrasounds and then use radiographs to get puppy head counts.

ADD: There are different health screenings. Some require bloodwork (thyroid panel, brucella, vWD,etc.); some require x-rays (OFA, PennHip); some require a doppler via a Cardiologist; and some require a visit to a canine opthomologist (CERF).What technology is involved in dog breeding?
Most any aspect of breeding except for just putting two dogs together.

AI's...including shipping semen

Semen storage

Vaginal smears

Progesterone testing

Ultrasound

X-ray

Are you writing a paper on it or something? What technology is involved in dog breeding?
I think the biggest thing that a responsible breeder does that others don't is the health screening tests that evaluate what genetic health defects may be passed on to puppies.

They also will put a lot of effort into finding the perfect stud that will result in the best puppies, which may mean that artificial insemination may be easier than getting two dogs together.
Technology... well I guess you have the health testing to do for your breed which involves the testing of biopsies or blood samples or cheek swabs. That's all done at the lab.

Most serious breeders have a computer programme to help them plan a breeding programme and hold important data. I use breeders assistant which most would say is one of the best. You can check inbreeding coefficients etc as well as see possible future pedigrees at the click of a button - once the data has all been entered that is. It is also handy for printing out pedigrees, show entry forms and any other forms necessary.

A lot of what used to be paperwork is now done online eg KC registration of a litter, so I guess that's a little more technology for you.

Most stock used for breeding has been in the show ring and more technology is used there with facilities such as online entry and show information.

It depends how far you want to go with your question. We are certainly using more and more technology as each year passes.

I hope this has helped

really all you need god has already given the animals. if the female is full breed, as is the male. you will get full bred pups. let the male in with the female when she's in heat. he'll know what to do.
Most good breeders don't use "technology" to breed. If for some reason the famale won't mate with a male, they spay her. Or if the male can't seem to breed with a female, he gets neutered.
