What role and responsibility does a technology company such as Google have towards society in general? Should the home company culture, ethics, and politics impact how the company operates in China? To what extent do you agree with those critics about how Google is going along with China鈥檚 censorship of the company鈥檚 sites? What role and responsibility does a technology company such as Google have towards society in general? Should?
Public companies like Google are only beholden to the shareholders. Anything they do beyond taking steps to increase shareholder value is unnecessary, and could be a liability on their bottom line profits.

If Google did become a benevolent force in the world, and it caused their profits to tank, they would likely be bought out by someone who would cease that unprofitable activity for the benefit of the employees and shareholders.

Re: China, Google has no choice; they do not have any power over the Chinese government.
