What has been one problem with this technology?

Describe two ways technology has helped improve the way we deal with waste. What is a benefit of changes in food packaging technology, such as milk cartons?
In the U.S., milk used to be delivered in glass bottles, which were recycled.

By switching to cartons (waxed paper, plastic, plasticized paper, etc.) the milk companies benefited from lower costs.

Of course, for society as a whole, the result has been greater environmental pollution, greater waste of resources, etc.

In some countries, milk is often sold in plastic bags.

This greatly reduces the amount of plastic that is wasted compared with plastic cartons, bottles, etc.

Then there is the wrapping of coconuts in plastic. Supermarkets found they sold more coconuts when they wrapped them in plastic even though the coconut came in its own hard, impervious, waterproof shell. Again, a great benefit to the supermarkets but a loss to society.

The latest method for dealing with waste is to reproduce the natural wetlands that once handled sewage, etc. but that society destroyed.
