What did doctors do before the invention of ventilators?

i have to write a paper on a certain technology that made an impact on my life. Im choosing the ventilator because without it, my sister wouldnt be here today. i have to explain what would have been done without this technology, in this case, to save someones life. im only 18 so im not sure what they did back then.

thanks in advance! What did doctors do before the invention of ventilators?
Before ventilators, people simply died. Bird really saved the day (and millions of lives) by designing the first form of a ventilator. Before ventilators, there was an understanding that pushing air into the lungs could help people "come back to life" but obviously, no one was going to give mouth-to-mouth to a chronically ill individual.

Anyway, I think you should just google mechanical ventilation as I'm sure you'll need to cite resources. There are a lot of fascinating facts about it and since you can apply your own experience to it, you'll probably end up with a great paper. What did doctors do before the invention of ventilators?
Ventilators today are positive pressure devices. Push air in, let it flow out.

Prior to that, the iron lung was the concept of choice -- by whatever device (a shell or a tank) the pressure outside the chest was reduced, allowing the chest to expand, and then after inhaling, an expiration phase ensued. Polio did a great job in increasing demand for the iron lung.

Before science became involved, all sorts of bizarre rituals were done, blowing smoke, attempts at using a bellows, etc. What did doctors do before the invention of ventilators?
Before Ventilators, there were what they called Posterior Back wall massages and Ambubags (Portable ventilators). Back wall massages consist of putting the patient on their front and start pushing down on their chest to make them breath. This technique is still somewhat use in life saving method of drowning victims.
