What are some unobvious examples of technology that we have at home or in schools?

Giving a presentation on technology to some year 8s, just wanted to give them some unobvious examples of technology that they would have in their house, I know there is loads I'm just seriously too tired to think, its been a long day. I was at a symposium where we were discussing various wireless devices and the speaker asked the audience to guess, or count up, how many wireless devices they had on their person. Cell phone is obvious, but then start thinking about bluetooth attachments, keyless remotes for vehicles (not too many year 8s will have one, but they know what it is I'm sure), entry badges, garage door openers, etc. and these are just the ones that can fit in your pocket. Of course wireless is just one aspect of technology, but a prevalent one these days.What are some unobvious examples of technology that we have at home or in schools?

I think the most brilliant yet not-so-obvious thing is the bicycle - what a brilliant invention ! It has a strong rigid steel frame, light but very strong steel or aluminium wheels that rotate around a hard steel axle using ball-bearings. The drive is by pedals, cranks, gearwheels and a chain plus gearing, with rubber tyres filled with air to give a smooth ride. The speed is constantly variable between 0 and maybe 50 mph using gears, and it doesn't use any non-renewable energy source like coal or petrol. It's a cheap, efficient and environment-friendly means of land transport. You may say a horse or donkey is cheaper, but have you seen what vets charge when THEY go wrong ? And when have you last bought a good horse for under 拢1000 ? if you have a nice bike like mine (拢500) it also has a hub dynamo and LED lights so you can see where you go at night without buying throwaway batteries or bulbs that blow after 20 or 30 hours.
